    Born 8 March 1840 in Newton, Massachusettes; father of Edwin G., Ernest H., Herbert L., Lynn W., and William E. Clarke; organist, age 16; superintendent of music instruction in Dayton, Ohio, c. 1871; in Erie, Pennsylvania, 1873; established Clarke, Kinsley & Co. with Stephen P. Kinsley in Indianapolis, Indiana, 1874; renamed William H. Clarke & Co. (Kinsley returned to Boston) 1875-c.1881; in Boston, Massachusetts, by 1878, organist; professor of music in Toronto, Canada, 4 years;in Woburn, Massachusetts, by 1890; suffered debilitating stroke in 1892; died 10 December 1913 in Reading, Massachusetts.
